Sound City is the UK champion for new music: a globally recognised music festival and talent development agency and an international ambassador for Liverpool culture - proudly based in the North of England.
We’ve been designing and delivering events since 2007, across the UK, Europe, America and Asia. We create cultural experiences for diverse audiences and life-changing music-making and support programmes with marginalised and underrepresented young people.
Our Vision: A world where everybody benefits from the transformative power of music
Our Mission: To enable more artists and industry professionals to live, work and train across the Liverpool City Region and diversify the music industry
Since 2008 we’ve showcased 7,000+ artists to 550,000 people in Liverpool & overseas. We’ve been a springboard for megastars, inc. Ed Sheeran, Stormzy and Jamie Webster.
We’ve helped create 200 jobs, supported 42 start-ups, and mentored 200+ artists and 1000 young people who’ve gone on to have number 1 albums, sell-out tours and brilliant music industry careers.
We have been an Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation (NPO) since 2018. We are currently on a trajectory towards achieving full charitable status.

We are currently seeking to recruit additional volunteer Board Members with specialist expertise and experience in the following areas:
- Environmental Responsibility and Sustainability
- Equality, Diversity, Inclusivity (EDI) and Justice
- Charitable Governance and Finance
We are also seeking to recruit other volunteer Board Members who are passionate about music, committed to supporting our vision and mission, and who represent key stakeholder groups with whom we work, including: young people (aged 18-25), emerging artists and music industry professionals – in particular those from minority, underrepresented and disadvantaged groups in the North of England.
The role is non-remunerated, although reasonable expenses will be covered (e.g. travel to in-person board meetings or training/networking events). All board members are expected to make the following commitments, amounting to a minimum of around 3 days (24 hours) on average per year - more for those who want to get more involved in optional activity:
- Attendance at 4 x quarterly board meetings each year - typically 2 hours each, either online or face-to-face, plus background reading. These currently take place on Thursday afternoons in Mar, Jun, Sep, Dec but timings are reviewed periodically to suit board availability.
- Participation in subcommittees / working groups – relating to specific areas of governance (e.g. finance) or ACE Investment Principles. This may include taking a lead strategic role on an area that suits your personal expertise/experience and/or buddying with a member of staff who is responsible for day-to-day delivery in that area.
- Participation in training and networking sessions - including our annual festival and conference in Liverpool, and other bespoke training activities to help board members to develop their skills and knowledge (e.g. in charitable governance, EDI).
- Delivery of mentoring (optional) – either to members of the Sound City team or participants on our various learning and development programmes.
